Understanding Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition characterised by facial flushing, persistent redness, visible vessels and blemishes. Although the cause of rosacea is not yet known, many theories exist including unstable blood vessels, the Demodex mite, genetics, H.pylori bacteria in the stomach, small intestine bacterial overgrowth and altered immune response.

Known as GAGs, glycosaminoglycans are responsible for maintaining hydration and contributing to the hydrolipidic barrier. This barrier stops good components from leaving the skin and prevents invasion of foreign bodies.

When this barrier becomes compromised because of extreme conditions or poor product use, skin can become sensitive leading to redness and visible vessels (telangiectasias).

Key Ingredients for treatment

Hinokitiol: Anti-bacterial (anti-microbial) that targets the entire cell.

Vitamin C: Master anti-oxidant for protection against free radicals and strengthen capillary walls.

Sea Whip: Anti-inflammatory and calming.

Zinc Oxide: Physical UVA/UVB protection.

Rosacea Treatment Options

Step 1: Consult your skin care professional

Rosacea is a medical condition that should be diagnosed by a skin care professional before starting any treatment plan.

Step 2: Relieve irritation and redness

Calm the skin with skin soothing ingredients such as hinokitiol, sea whip, niacinamide and aloe. Prevent flare-ups caused by environmental factors with antioxidants.

Step 3: Repair the skin’s natural moisture barrier

Maintaining the skin’s natural barrier is crucial to preventing further moisture loss and improving cell turnover. Dry skin has a slower cell turnover compared to adequately hydrated skin; gentle exfoliating treatments can help regulate the process.

Step 3: Reduce bacteria and/or other microbial agents

Theorized causes of rosacea include bacteria and other microbes. Use natural antimicrobial ingredients to help keep skin free of breakouts.

Step 4: Protect from UV rays

Choose mineral-based broad-spectrum sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which keep the skin cooler than chemical sunscreen ingredients by reflecting UV rays. Mineral ingredients are generally less irritating than chemicals, which is important for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.
